How it works

Our Methodology

Jax Horizon is built on transparency. Here's exactly how we find, score, and display the projects shaping Jacksonville's future — no black boxes, no guesswork.

How We Find Projects

Jax Horizon pulls from three sources to build the most complete picture of innovation happening in Jacksonville:

Public data sources
We monitor the City of Jacksonville's open data portal, government press releases, and public meeting records to surface city-led initiatives as they happen.
Community submissions
Anyone can submit a project using our Submit form. Submissions are reviewed by the Jax Horizon team before being listed — we verify that projects are real, Jacksonville-based, and have a clear civic purpose.
Research & partnerships
Our team actively researches local universities, nonprofits, and businesses to identify innovation happening across all five sectors — even when it isn't being publicized widely.

How We Score Projects

Every project gets an Impact Score from 1–10. This isn't a popularity contest — it reflects how meaningfully a project serves Jacksonville's residents. We look at four factors:

25%
Community Reach
How many Jacksonville residents does this project directly affect or benefit?
25%
Innovation Level
Is this a genuinely new approach, or does it push existing technology in a meaningful direction?
25%
Measurable Impact
Does the project have clear, trackable outcomes — not just good intentions?
25%
Equity & Access
Does the project benefit underserved communities or improve access to resources for all Jacksonvillians?

What the Status Labels Mean

Active The project is live and operational — real work is happening right now.
Beta The project is running in a limited pilot or testing phase before full launch.
Planning The project has been announced or funded but hasn't launched yet.
Completed The project has finished and its outcomes have been documented.

Our Open Data Sources

Jax Horizon is built on publicly available data. We actively monitor these sources to surface new projects and keep existing ones up to date. All sources are free and open to the public — we encourage you to explore them yourself.
